The
ARK
Developed over six years through Ahbstra’s in-house engineering and validated in collaboration with Cambridge Consultants, the ARK reflects a disciplined R&D process focused on innovation, proof, and performance.

2019
MOF research begins

Richard Perkin joins as CTO, bringing expertise in air-handling and thermal management.

Early research focuses on MOF-to-air reactor designs capable of the fastest regeneration cycle times. Surface-coated approaches are ruled out due to fouling risk and cycle-time constraints.

Development centred on a fluidised bed reactor, later evolving into a rotating fluidised bed, enabling rapid cycling, consistent airflow, and long-term reliability.

2020
First prototype built & patents filed

The first basic demonstrator is built, which helped progress Ahbstra's technical approach.

The first set of global patents are filed to protect the core technology.

2021
First proof of desorption + trialling of stacked cells

A benchtop rig is built to validate the patented desorption system design.

Building on successful rotating fluidised bed experiments, multiple cells are stacked to increase MOF density within the reactor.

The results confirm strong performance and establish the foundation of Ahbstra’s Suspended MOF Particle Reactor.

2022
Patents for
scalable technology

A second-generation, continuous-cycling demonstrator is completed, producing circa 20 litres of water per day.

A second set of global patents is filed, enabling the scalability of Ahbstra’s core technology.

Ahbstra opens its London office, and the CEO transitions to full-time leadership.

2023
Acceleration & partnerships

Ahbstra engages Cambridge Consultants, a world-leading deep-tech engineering partner, to support system development and progression from small-scale demonstrator to full-scale prototype.

A materials partnership is established with a leading MOF producer, providing access to high-performance MOFs produced at scale via continuous-flow reactors, enabling consistent quality, lower costs, and scalable supply.

Ahbstra Europe established as a joint venture with SNP, one of Spain’s leading mechanical and electrical firms. Market insights are fed into machine design.

2024
Prototype scale up

Ahbstra and Cambridge Consultants start building a large-scale alpha prototype.

Zane van Romunde joins to lead commercialisation, bringing experience spanning start-ups and multinationals, strengthening the transition from engineering validation to market delivery.

Barcelona office opens, providing a base for European operations and market expansion.

2025
Technology at scale

Alpha prototype is completed at Cambridge Consultants campus, validating the water production capacity and proving the technology at scale.

Operational learnings from the Alpha system are incorporated into the pre-production unit design, supporting scale-up to 500 litres per day.

Demetris Stylianou joins Ahbstra as Head of Engineering, bringing direct experience from leading work on the Alpha system at Cambridge Consultants and strengthening in-house delivery capability.

Internal engineering capability is expanded, growing Ahbstra’s in-house engineering team to six.
